Hey guys!
I only have time for a short “Good News” post today, because… it’s Father’s Day!
(If you realized this just now, you’re going to have a very annoyed man in your life…)
I encourage you all to enjoy some quality time with the men in your life, be him your parent, father figure, husband, uncle, or friend. Personally, I think that these guys need to be appreciated.
I think most of you reading this will know Father’s Day, but did you know there’s another holiday today? It’s one that’s just as important to everyone, and even more so to the history of free America: Juneteenth.
Juneteenth
June 19th, 1865. A few months after the civil war, 2,000 union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. There, they announced to the last slaves in America, that they were free. America was finally, once and for all, a free nation.
The road had been a long and tough one; slavery had persisted as an ugly black mark on the new nation for nearly a century, and the practice had existed even longer. Eventually, it took a civil war for freedom to become national policy. However, the road didn’t end when the shackles were broken; for years after that, African Americans had to face unbridled racism, and people determined to make them second class citizens. But despite these roadblocks the fight for equality pushed forward undeterred, spearheaded by such great men as Martin Luther King. The Civil Rights Act was enacted, which “prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin.” (Department of Labor).
And still, the fight must continue.
Every person can make a difference.
We celebrate that day in Galveston not just because it reminds us of how far we’ve gone, but where we’re headed.
See ya, guys. “Jurassic World: Dominion” awaits.
Nice job Reed 💫
